Setting the Gold Standard: NDPC Pursues ISO 27001 and 27701 to Fortify National Data Trust

The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr Vincent Olatunji, led staff of the Commission in a specialised training for certification in the ISO 27701 Privacy Information Management System (PIMS) and ISO 27001 Information Security Management System (ISMS).

In his opening remarks, Dr Olatunji described the ISO certification process as a significant milestone for the Commission, achieved within a short period of its establishment. He noted that the initiative is critical to strengthening safeguards within the Commission’s systems and demonstrates its commitment to protecting data in line with global best practices.

He added that the certification positions the NDPC in alignment with international standards and urged all participating staff to approach the exercise with utmost seriousness, emphasising that the nation’s data privacy regulator must lead by example.

The certification is expected to support compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, enhance trust and accountability, reduce regulatory risks, and improve operational efficiency. It will also facilitate international engagements and strengthen data privacy practices in Nigeria, reinforcing the NDPC’s mission to build a resilient, world-class data protection institution while deepening trust in the country’s data governance framework.
